Selecting an Inpatient Drug Rehabilitation Program

The importance of selecting the right inpatient drug rehab center for yourself or your loved one cannot be overstated—and for many obvious reasons. In the majority of cases, those who suffer with addiction to the point of requiring inpatient care have lives in turmoil; some are truly in a life-or-death situation, whether they themselves realize it or not.

Opting to leave family, friends, jobs and familiar surroundings, to say nothing of removing access to their drug of choice, is a daunting undertaking for anyone afflicted with addiction. It can feel overwhelming and presents many challenges, both to the patient and to his or her family. It is therefore critical that you select a drug rehabilitation center like Reflections Recovery Center: one that is not only properly equipped to handle the specific issues of the individual, but that also provides the right kind of atmosphere that will help cultivate and foster long-term recovery once the inpatient treatment period is over. Otherwise, the addicted individual, once back home, may revert back to his or her old behaviors and will quickly find himself or herself right back at square one. Depending on the severity of the circumstances, this can have truly devastating consequences.

Breaking the Cycle

It is important not to think of inpatient drug rehab as a magic wand. You cannot ship a person off to a treatment center and expect them to return home as if they never were addicted to begin with. Addiction is a lifelong struggle, and inpatient rehabilitation is just the first step in a series in that person’s journey towards a new, healthier, better life. It is up to the individual, the family, his or her extended support system, and the assistance of medical and mental health professionals to ensure that forward momentum continues after inpatient treatment is complete.

The addicted individual must be fully ready and willing to break the cycle of addiction. Inpatient treatment is an excellent way to help a person focus on their addiction—what causes it, what triggers it, and how to redirect or minimize those triggers when they do occur—without external influences from home. Many times, the way a person’s family interacts with them, despite perhaps being well-meaning in nature, has substantial influence on their addictive behaviors. Sometimes this is in the form of unintentional enabling or codependency, while other times the family is also engaged in addictive behaviors of their own.

Whatever the case may be, inpatient treatment helps remove these elements from the equation, further helping to break the cycle and help the patient see more clearly. Otherwise, the chances of relapse increase significantly; the patient may find himself or herself returning to treatment over and over.

What to Expect

In many cases, a medical detox is required prior to entering an inpatient drug rehabilitation center. Detoxing from many drugs often comes with profound withdrawal symptoms that can hinder treatment. If the individual has a substantial alcohol addiction, withdrawal without proper medical supervision can be life threatening and should never be undertaken alone.

After medical detox if needed, the individual will be transferred to the inpatient facility, where the staff will welcome them and assess their general medical and mental state. From there, they will learn about the facility and its layout, learn the schedule, and develop a routine that will generally not change much from day to day. This schedule will often include individual and group counseling, as well as activities designed to help promote general wellness, relieve anxiety, and strengthen body and mind. These activities will vary widely depending on the center chosen.

Inpatient treatment typically lasts anywhere from 28 days to 90 days. In some instances, treatment can last longer or shorter than this time. It is up to the specific person and the facility professionals to work out a customized plan of action that best suits the needs of the patient. Cost can also be a factor in determining length of stay. Medical insurance does cover the cost of many inpatient treatment plans, but just as every insurance plan is different, so is the amount each plan will cover. Discussing the type of insurance you have with the particular facility you have in mind will help you gain a thorough understanding of exactly how much you can expect your insurance to cover.
